no DPMI memory under Windows vista
Vista will include the .NET Framework (specifically, version 3.0), currently a large download for Windows XP users, whereas under Vista it's only people running existing dotnet apps that will have the large download; those running non-existant ones will be all set as well as traditional Win32 APIs.

An end to the Vista blues?
I'm still a bit confused between ¤ setting XP compatibility and just letting Vista use virtualization to help a ¤ legacy app run. But I really don't see how I guess my first question would be, why are you installing the app under a standard user account instead of an administrator account? Is UAC disabled?

Windows Vista and 16-bit DOS graphics?
What does an OS have to do with applications that can't run at adequate speed for machines that are, for the most part, made to run these same apps? And why are you obsessed with Vista? For all intents and purposes, though, under these recovery conditions, DRW does just as complete a job as EasyRecovery. In fact, if you want the top-level folders renamed, just keep a demo copy of EasyRecovery on your drive, run its scan, and rename the top-level folders based on its results.

When I run Arachne from a DOS window, it isn't running as a desktop app, it's running as a command line app in a *window on the desktop*. Big difference. db *** What I meant was that any DOS program can be run from the command line or under a desktop envelope. That is, no DOS program *requires* a desktop. Richard.

Installing Windows Vista?
Vista is worth just what I paid for it, which is nothing. I can't imagine why anyone would plunk down their hard earned money for Vista if they are fine with using XP. A lot of apps break under Vista, although more are being fixed every day. Unless you have some specific reason to run Vista, it is absolutely not

Seeing VERSIONINFO under Vista?
So having a 68K-speed CPU that ran mainframe programs made no sense, because a single-bus PC (even a Microchannel architecture) simply did not have the I/O bandwidth to run most mainframe apps. Running native D7 apps on Vista?
That's a 233MHz MMX Pentium with 64MB or RAM (OK, so not exactly bottom-of-the-range) and that ran much better under NT4 than it did under the supplied Win95. I've even run XP on it, though the low memory size makes that a struggle. **** I tried to install NT on my laptop, but it wouldn't install.

My Findings - VB6 Apps on Vista
The vb6 apps themselves will work on Vista. The largest 'snag' of it all is, in Vista, ALL applications get run as a standard (non-admin) user. Therefore, a standard user under Vista (again, this is THE DEFAULT), in order to install most software, will need to run the installer as admin.

OpenGL's Future under Microsoft Vista
NET and Vista. Most Windows applications which require Windows 95 will run on WINE with no special effort. Most Windows applications that run Windows 98 and NET for Windows XP won't even run with the Mono libraries. Generally, it's very easy to write applications which will run under WINE/Crossover, in fact,

Vista version check volunteers?
No admin rights. Then they should be able to play on Vista without admin rights. That's just not true. Vista has changed enough directory and registry permissions to require administrator priviliges that didn't require them before that many applications that could run under standard accouns can no longer do so.

Question about writing windows apps that write to network drives ...
Most OpenGL apps run in full screen exclusive or full screen window anyway, so who cares if the fancy Aero desktop turns off while the app runs? When using an ICD extensions will be available, just like now. Many users will likely turn off Aero anyway. Yes, this is a pain that Microsoft is now using Aero to
